Photo name: Pukeko Case

Photo category: Birds

Photo description: This is a photo of a Pukeko resource case. The Pukeko is a flightless bird native to New Zealand. In New Zealand's early years there were no predators for native birds to worry about, they had no need to fly away to avoid predators and so flourished eating the large amounts of insects found in the rich, fertile New Zealand bush soil. After the introduction of overseas predators such as stoats and ferrets, many of the native, flightless birds became endangered as they are to this day. Luckily, in many of the cases a lot of hard work has been taken out by organisations such as the New Zealand Department of Conservation and the birds have well looked after breeding programs and in some cases specially prepared, predator free islands off the coast.
